Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

TCM is a wholistic form of healing that dates back 2000 years. Today TCM is one of the most widely practised traditional medicine systems in the world and is increasingly being used in the West. TCM is a complete and complex system of medicine, with its own unique diagnostic and treatment principles. TCM incorporates its own unique pathophysiology and a range of therapies to treat and prevent disease. To heal the body and prevent illness, TCM incorporates acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet, massage and exercise.

What can Traditional Chinese Medicine Treat?
Fertility Issues
Fatigue
Injuries
Pain
Headaches
Acne
Digestive Problems
Menstrual Pain
Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
Asthma
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Arthritis
Constipation or Diarrhoea

Herbal and Dietary Medicine

Chinese herbal remedies are made up of combinations of different herbs and animal products. Dietary medicine is also guided by Chinese herbal theory. According to Chinese Medicine, food and medicine come from the same source and an excess of food or lack of food causes sickness. Therefore, food is important for the prevention and treatment of disease and used in Chinese Medicine as part of the therapeutic process. Central to Chinese Medicine is that the correct diet is essential for the preservation of health or healing. We use only the best quality herbs approved by the Therapeutics Goods Act (TGA).

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is used for a wide variety of conditions and injury recovery, such as management of pain and nausea, cardiovascular disorders, digestive disorders, neurological problems and drug addiction. Acupuncture needling stimulates the brain to release endo-chemicals that travel around in a person's blood to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation and anxiety. High quality stainless steel acupuncture needles are only used once.

Weight Management
All diets work for as long as you follow them, making short term weight loss easy to achieve. However, maintaining a healthy weight is difficult for most people. Most of our weight loss clients have tried numerous diets with varying perceived levels of success.

Weight loss is a complex problem which requires a comprehensive solution:

Preparedness to change and learn
Personalised dietary and nutritional advice
Effective exercise
Identification and treatment of the underlying causes of weight gain
Establishment of long-term healthy eating habits
An effective weight management program will ensure you lose fat and excess water, but maintain or increase your muscle mass. We are able to monitor your body composition using Bio-impedance Analysis.

Anyone wanting to control or manage their weight should be undertaking regular exercise as part of their daily life and activities. People need to be aware of the importance of aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise and weight (resistance) training exercise in long term health and weight management. Our Clinical Nutritionist and Fitness Consultant will assess your
suitability for our weight management program.

We specialise in long term weight management -

Cardiovascular Exercise
BENEFITS OF CARDIOVASCULAR EXERCISE
Regardless of your age, weight or fitness level, cardiovascular exercise is good for you. Cardiovascular exercise, also known as aerobic exercise, has been proven to have a number of health benefits when performed on a regular basis.

Aerobic exercise helps push the heart and circulatory system, this stress forces the body to adapt and change. As your body adapts to regular aerobic exercise, you'll get stronger and more efficient. Cardiovascular exercise is essential and will be part of your Vitality Fitness Therapy training program.

Consider some of the many ways that aerobic exercise can help you feel better and enjoy life to the fullest:

Improves heart and lung function (more efficient cardiovascular/respiratory system)
Increases endurance, energy and general stamina to enable you to exercise for longer
Increases blood supply to muscles and allows you to use oxygen more efficiently
Decreases blood pressure
Reduces the risks of developing diabetes and other diseases such as heart disease
Improves blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels
Develops a positive body composition change and an increase in lean body mass
Increases metabolic rate, assisting in fat loss.
Reduces stress and improves emotional and psychological condition
Helps combat depression and anxiety, raises self-esteem, improves mood and physical awareness.
Reduces risk of osteoporosis and improves the strength of bones, ligaments and tendons
Aids in sleeping.
Improves glucose tolerance and reduces insulin resistance
Improves general quality of life
Other improvements in cardiovascular/cardiorespiratory function (heart and lungs) on a physiological level:

Improves cardiovascular fitness, decreases resting heart rate
Increases maximum oxygen consumption (reduced workload on the heart); capillary density and blood flow to active muscles.
Increases total blood volume and ability to carry oxygen, allowing for maximal ventilation and increases lung diffusion capacity.
Increases maximal cardiac output (amount of blood pumped every minute)
Increases maximal stroke volume (amount of blood pumped with each beat)

Weight Training
BENEFITS OF WEIGHT TRAINING
Resistance training also referred to as weight training, if done on a regular basis has many direct benefits and along with aerobic training should be included in your Vitality Fitness Therapy personalised program.

J. Kraemer et al (2004) classifies resistance training as “a type of exercise that requires the body's musculature to move (or attempt to move) against an opposing force, usually presented by some type of equipment”.

The goal of resistance training, according to the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI), is to "gradually and progressively overload the musculoskeletal system”. Resistance training overloads the body's musculature system placing stresses on it that cause physiological changes to occur. The body's musculoskeletal system will in turn change and will make activities we perform on a regular basis much easier.

Many people question the inclusion of weights in a program, but when it comes to improving body image, weight loss, health and quality of life a little weight training can go a long way. A common misconception is that weight training will put on heaps of muscle and make you look ‘big' and ‘bulky'. Many are cautious when it comes to the effects of resistance training, not wanting to become excessively muscle bound. Dispelling this myth is a major challenge for the exercise professional. Quite simply, for this to occur you will need to have perfect genetics, train for years at a high intensity, maintain strict dietary constraints and have an enormous amount of supplements.
Weight Training
Vitality Fitness Therapy has a few great reasons why resistance training should be part of your fitness program and incorporated into your life:

Increases Metabolic Rate so you can burn more energy (calories)
Increases lean muscle mass and muscle strength, functional strength (for everyday tasks) power, and endurance
Prevents injury
Improves posture, balance, flexibility, mobility and stability
Aids rehabilitation and recovery
Enhances performance in sports or exercise
Improves mood and self-esteem and body composition – a sense of well-being
Reduces body fat
Strengthens the muscular and skeletal system and increases circulation
Aids graceful ageing
Improves quality of life and i n general, lowers mortality rates at all ages from all causes

There are also many health benefits associated with weight training, which works as a preventive medicine:

Aids in cholesterol control by increases High Density Lipoprotein (good cholesterol) and decreasing Low Density Lipoprotein (bad cholesterol)
Reduces risk of diabetes and insulin needs
Lowers risk of cardiovascular disease
Improves heart condition with a lower heart rate and blood pressure
Lowers risk of breast cancer - reduces high oestrogen levels linked to the disease
Increases and restores bone mineral density and therefore reduces chances of osteoporosis
Reduces risk associated with colon cancer and coronary heart disease
Reduces symptoms of PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome)
Reduces stress and anxiety
I'm sure we all could do with a better quality of life. For a properly prescribed personalised training program tailored to your specific needs contact our fitness consultant today call on

Bio-impedance Analysis
Our Clinical Nutritionist is a specialist in the use of Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA). BIA enables our team to maximise your wellness and ensure the best possible results.

WHAT IS BIOIMPEDANCE ANALYSIS (BIA)?
BIA is a scientifically validated test that was originally developed for use in monitoring hospital patients after surgery. It has also been used in a number of space missions to monitor astronauts' health. Our Clinical Nutritionist will connect leads to your hands and feet, passing a small current through your body. This is a painless procedure which provides information on several of your body's ‘biomarkers'.

WHAT DO BIOMARKERS TELL YOU ABOUT YOUR HEALTH?
Biomarkers are parameters that measure an aspect of your health. They enable our Clinical Nutritionist to measure your:

Energy Levels
Toxicity
Inflammation
Hydration Levels
Cellular Function and Health
Biological Age
Fat Mass
Muscle Mass
Most importantly, it enables us to measure your response to our treatment. No other test provides all of this information so quickly and easily.

WHAT WILL I RECEIVE?
Our Clinical Nutritionist will perform a quick test and then enter your results into a computer. You will be given a computerised analysis of your health, including your key biomarkers. Over time, your results can be compared, so that you and the Vitality team have a very clear idea of your progress.

PREPARATION FOR THE TEST
To get the most accurate results:

Empty your bladder before the test.
Allow yourself 10 minutes to sit down before the test and drink a glass of water.
Avoid alcohol for 12 hours before the test.
Don't use moisturiser on your arms or legs.
The test requires no covering on your foot – make sure you can fully remove your shoe/sock/stocking.
Height, waist and wrist measurements (in cms) will be taken, in addition to your current weight (in kgs).
COST
Bio-impedance Analysis costs $45* for a 15 minute session. This includes the BIA test and discussion of the results with our Clinical Nutritionist.
