There are two general states of mind: the conscious and the unconscious. While under hypnosis people are in the unconscious state, and are very open and receptive. This openness and receptiveness is used by the Hypnotherapist to both explore past experiences that are remembered with clarity while under hypnosis, and to offer suggestions that will be very powerful after the hypnosis is over, such as with quitting smoking. One cannot be hypnotized without their consent and openness to it. Hypnotherapy is successful in exploring past experiences through various counseling techniques, as well assisting with breaking unhealthy patterns such as smoking, over eating, or sexual inhibitions.
